Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, recently released data showing that 989,000 people acquired citizenship in the EU in 2022. This represents a significant increase of 20% compared to 2021. The data provides valuable insights into citizenship trends within the EU and highlights the growing number of individuals seeking to become EU citizens. Eurostat annually estimates the number of new citizens in countries. Statistics for 2023 will be available at the beginning of 2025.

Moroccans Top the List, Syrians and Albanians Follow

The report also reveals the nationalities of individuals who received the most EU citizenships in 2022. Moroccans topped the list with 112,700 passports issued, followed by Syrians (94,400) and Albanians (61,800). These figures indicate the strong ties between these countries and the EU, as well as the desire of their citizens to become part of the European community.

Italy, Spain, and Germany Lead in Issuing Passports to Foreigners

In terms of the number of passports issued to foreigners, Italy ranked first with 213,700 passports, followed by Spain (181,800) and Germany (166,600). These countries have traditionally been popular destinations for immigrants and continue to attract a large number of people seeking better opportunities and a higher standard of living.

Decrease in Citizenship Applications in France, Netherlands, and Portugal

While the overall trend in the EU shows an increase in citizenship applications, some countries experienced a decrease in 2022. France, the Netherlands, and Portugal all saw a decline in the number of passports issued to foreigners compared to the previous year. This could be attributed to various factors, such as changes in immigration policies or economic conditions.

New Citizenship Law in Portugal Simplifies Process for Golden Visa Holders

Portugal recently introduced a new citizenship law that simplifies the process for Golden Visa holders to obtain citizenship. Under the new law, investors who have held a Golden Visa for five years can now apply for Portuguese citizenship. This is expected to attract more foreign investment and boost the country’s economy.

Brazilians File Most Citizenship Applications in Portugal

According to the National Institute of Statistics of Portugal, Brazilians filed the most citizenship applications in the country in 2022. This is likely due to the strong cultural and economic ties between Brazil and Portugal, as well as the favorable conditions offered by the Portuguese Golden Visa program.
