Hitting the Road in Turkey: Bringing Your Own Car

In recent years, self-guided car travel has surged in popularity. The freedom and convenience it offers are a major draw for many travelers. This has led to a surge in questions: can you bring your own car into Turkey?

Temporary Imports: The Six-Month Limit

According to Turkish Customs Legislation No. 4458, foreign-registered vehicles can be temporarily imported for a maximum of six months within a twelve-month period. After that initial six months, the car must be driven out of Turkey and remain outside the country for another six months before it can be re-imported. This cycle can only be repeated twice; importing the car for a third six-month period is prohibited.

Securing a Temporary Entry Blue Card (YTGGK)

To import your car, you’ll need a temporary entry blue card, officially called the “Yabancı Taşıtlar Geçici Giriş Belgesi” (YTGGK). This card is obtained from the Turkish Touring and Automobile Club (Turing).

Required Documents for the YTGGK

Obtaining the temporary entry card requires presenting several documents:

  • Passport
  • Residence permit
  • Work permit (if applicable)
  • Proof of pension amount (for retirees)
  • Proof from an educational institution (for students)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Car ownership documents (registration documents, purchase invoice)
  • Turkish-translated and notarized versions of all the above documents

Insurance and Customs Duties

You’ll also need to have valid car insurance in Turkey. Be aware that all documents must be translated into Turkish and notarized before submission.

Customs duties will be assessed and paid based on your car’s engine capacity and age.

Vehicle Registration and Limitations

Once customs requirements are met, the car must be registered with the General Directorate of Highway Traffic (GİBDD) in Turkey. You’ll be issued a license plate from the “MA/MZ” group, valid for the duration of your residence permit.

It’s important to remember that the imported car cannot be sold, rented, or loaned. Only immediate family members (parents, children, spouse) are allowed to use the vehicle.

Planning Your Trip: Essential Resources

Importing your car offers a convenient way to explore Turkey on your own terms. However, adhering to customs regulations and completing the necessary paperwork is crucial.

Familiarize yourself with the detailed information available on the Touring and Automobile Club (Turing) website. Consulting Turkish tourist organizations for comprehensive advice before your trip is also recommended.
