International Schools in Muscat: Fees, Curricula and Where to Live

Families weighing a home in the capital area usually ask the same question first: which of the international schools in Muscat can the child realistically reach each morning, and what will the tuition bill look like? This guide answers it with figures that were read directly from school websites on 16 October 2026, tuition for the 2026-27 school year in Omani rials (OMR), and with the drive times that our own listing pages print for each community. Dollar amounts use the peg of OMR 1 = $2.6008.

You will learn how the school market is organised, what the main curricula mean in practice, how six schools price a child of 10 and a child of 14, which one-time charges sit on top of tuition, and how those add up for a two-child family. You will also see which communities list which schools and at what drive time, how admission and age cut-offs work, how the 2026-27 calendar runs, and how developer handover dates line up with school years. It is a reference page, not a recommendation to choose any school or any property.

International Schools in Muscat at a Glance

The table below collects the headline facts that frame the rest of the guide. Every number comes from the source named in its row, and fee levels are the 2026-27 figures published by each school on the date of checking.

Two points shape the numbers. First, schools publish fees per school year, and a family reading this page later in 2027 should expect new tables. Second, the schools quoted here are examples drawn from the pages that publish complete fee schedules; the Muscat market is wider, and a school that does not appear in a table has simply not been priced here.

How the Muscat School Market Is Organised

Muscat’s education supply has three layers. The first is the government system, which the Ministry of Education runs for the whole country. According to the Oman Observer, the 2026/2027 year opened on 6 September 2026 with 876,117 students in 1,298 public schools, alongside a new curriculum that introduced English from Grade 1 and Chinese in Grade 12. The second layer is the community school, and the example with the most public data is the network governed by the Board of Directors of Indian Schools in Oman, which describes itself as the apex body for 22 schools and reports 47,465 students, 2,086 teachers and 760 administrative staff. Seven of those schools are named by the Board as being in the Muscat area: Indian School Muscat, Al Ghubra, Darsait, Al Wadi Al Kabir, Bousher, Al Seeb and Al Maabela.

The third layer is the group of fee-charging international schools that this guide concentrates on. The International Schools Database lists 38 of them for Muscat and tags each with a curriculum. Reading those tags, 25 of the 38 carry a British label, 9 an International Baccalaureate (IB) label, 4 an American label, 3 an Indian label, and one each a French and a Pakistani label; some schools carry two labels, such as British and Omani, so the counts overlap. The database prints a fee range for 29 of the 38 and marks the remaining nine as not public. Among the published ranges the lowest start is OMR 450 at Indian School Muscat and the highest ceiling is OMR 11,560 at The American International School of Muscat (TAISM).

The practical consequence is a wide price spread inside one city. A family comparing international schools in Muscat is not choosing between near-identical products: a community-school place at a few hundred rials a year and a British or American school at five figures are different offers, with different admission rules, class languages and exam routes. The rest of this guide stays with the fee-charging group, because that is the group whose fee pages are public and comparable, and because the earlier family-life article on our site, Family Life in Oman: Safari World, Schools and Where to Buy Property, already covers attractions, healthcare and general community character.

Curricula Explained: British, American, IB, Indian and French

Across international schools in Muscat, a curriculum label tells a family what the child will study and which qualification closes each stage. The labels below are used in the schools’ own descriptions.

British

British School Muscat describes itself as a not-for-profit school for ages 3 to 18 that follows the English National Curriculum, and says it has operated since 1971 under a Royal Charter. Its fee table is organised in the English style: Foundation Stage 1 and 2 for ages 3 to 5, Key Stage 1 for Years 1 and 2, Key Stage 2 for Years 3 to 6, Key Stage 3 for Years 7 to 9, Key Stage 4 for Years 10 and 11 (the GCSE years) and Key Stage 5 for the Sixth Form, Years 12 and 13. Cheltenham Muscat describes a path from early years to A-Levels, and Downe House Muscat, according to the database, leads to IGCSE and A-Levels. Royal Grammar School Guildford Muscat is listed for ages 4 to 14, so it covers the lower and middle years only.

American

TAISM uses the US twelve-grade structure, from Pre-Kindergarten 3 up to Grade 12, and its site states accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and Advanced Placement (AP) courses in the high school. Its grade equivalency page maps each age to the American grade and to the British year, which is useful for a family arriving from a different system.

International Baccalaureate

ABA Oman International School teaches the IB continuum: the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme, from early childhood to Grade 12. The school’s site reports more than 920 students. Its admissions page states that a Grade 12 applicant must be transferring from an IB Diploma school, which is a good example of how a curriculum can limit entry points in the last two years.

Indian

The Indian community schools follow the Indian national board system. The Board’s own CBSE page explains that the Central Board of Secondary Education is a national board for public and private schools in India and that affiliated schools use the NCERT curriculum. Class names run from kindergarten through Grade 12, and TAISM’s equivalency table lines Indian Grade 1 up with American Grade 1 at age 6.

French and others

The database lists one French-curriculum school, the Lycée Français de Mascate, with a fee range of OMR 3,526 to OMR 5,816 for 2025/2026, plus a Pakistani-curriculum school, a Sri Lankan school and several schools that combine the British or IB route with the Omani curriculum. These are the places to look when language of instruction at home is the main constraint.

International Schools in Muscat: 2026-27 Tuition Compared

The next table compares six schools for which a 2026-27 fee page was read in full. The columns follow age rather than school grade names, because a British Year 6 and an American Grade 5 both cover children of ten, and a British Year 10 and an American Grade 9 both cover children of fourteen. Where a school’s pricing is banded rather than year by year, the band is shown.

School Curriculum Age 10 (Year 6 / Grade 5) Age 14 (Year 10 / Grade 9) Final-year band
British School Muscat English National Curriculum OMR 6,143 ($15,977) OMR 9,503 ($24,715) OMR 10,666 ($27,740) in Years 12 and 13
The American International School of Muscat American, with AP OMR 9,290 ($24,161), Elementary band OMR 11,560 ($30,065), High School band OMR 11,560 in Grades 9 to 12
ABA Oman International School IB OMR 5,460 ($14,200), Grades 1 to 5 OMR 8,440 ($21,951), Grades 9 and 10 OMR 10,210 ($26,554) in Grades 11 and 12
Cheltenham Muscat British OMR 5,570 ($14,486), Grade 5 OMR 6,813 ($17,719), Grade 9 OMR 8,111 ($21,095) in Grades 11 and 12
Downe House Muscat British OMR 5,250 ($13,654), Grade 5 OMR 6,500 ($16,905), Grade 9 OMR 7,500 ($19,506) in Grades 11 and 12
Royal Grammar School Guildford Muscat British, ages 4 to 14 OMR 4,050 ($10,533), Grade 5 Not applicable, school ends at Grade 8 OMR 4,800 ($12,484) in Grades 7 and 8

What the table shows

Within the same age, the six schools span OMR 4,050 to OMR 9,290 at age 10, a ratio of about 2.3 to one (9,290 divided by 4,050 is 2.29). At age 14 the five schools that teach that age span OMR 6,500 to OMR 11,560, a ratio of about 1.8 to one (11,560 divided by 6,500 is 1.78). Fees rise with age in every school, but at different speeds: British School Muscat moves from OMR 4,400 in Foundation Stage 1 to OMR 10,666 in the Sixth Form, while Cheltenham Muscat moves from OMR 3,899 in KG 1 to OMR 8,111 in Grades 11 and 12.

British School Muscat also publishes the previous year’s table, which makes one year-on-year comparison possible. Its 2025-26 annual tuition was OMR 4,240 for FS1, 5,300 for FS2, 5,705 for Key Stage 1, 5,920 for Key Stage 2, 8,155 for Key Stage 3, 9,160 for Key Stage 4 and 10,280 for Key Stage 5. Dividing the 2026-27 figures by those gives increases of about 3.8% (4,400 over 4,240), 3.9% (5,506 over 5,300), 3.8% (5,920 over 5,705), 3.8% (6,143 over 5,920), 3.7% (8,460 over 8,155), 3.7% (9,503 over 9,160) and 3.8% (10,666 over 10,280). That is one school’s one-year change and not a forecast for any school, but it shows why a multi-year budget should be built from the current table and then checked each year against the new one.

Some pages in the table are structured differently. TAISM prices four bands (Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 at OMR 5,790, Elementary at OMR 9,290, Middle School at OMR 11,030 and High School at OMR 11,560) and states a one-time capital levy on top. ABA prices by semester and annual totals, and also lists two Family Class options for three- and four-year-olds at OMR 3,790 for a short day and OMR 5,050 for a day to 2:45 pm. Cheltenham Muscat and Downe House Muscat price every year group in three instalments with a smaller third term, which is why their annual totals are not three equal parts.

One-Time Charges That Sit Outside Tuition

At international schools in Muscat, tuition is only the largest line. Each school adds one-time or entry charges, and those differ in kind: some are deposits that come off the first invoice, some are levies that are not refunded, and some are fees that apply only for the first nine terms. The table separates them using the wording on each school’s page.

School Charge Amount How the school describes it
British School Muscat Assessment fee OMR 50 Due on or before assessment day
British School Muscat Reservation fee OMR 300 Within 14 days of an offer, deducted from Term 1 fees
British School Muscat Refundable deposit OMR 100 Paid with Term 1 fees, refundable on leaving under the stated conditions
British School Muscat Infrastructure fee OMR 300 per term From FS2 upward for the first nine terms, capped at OMR 2,700; OMR 2,025 for a third child; nothing for a fourth child
The American International School of Muscat Capital levy OMR 4,500 One-time and non-refundable per child enrolling for the first time, not charged for Pre-K3 and Pre-K4, may be spread over up to three years
ABA Oman International School Application fee OMR 75 Non-refundable, paid on submission
ABA Oman International School Registration deposit 10% of annual tuition Due on acceptance and deducted from semester fees
ABA Oman International School Enrolment fee OMR 3,500 (Option 1) or OMR 4,000 in four annual instalments (Option 2, self-paying parents) Non-refundable for every student from KG to Grade 12; 5% rebate for a second sibling and 10% from the third on Option 1
Cheltenham Muscat Application and assessment fees OMR 150 and OMR 200 The application fee is non-refundable; the assessment fee is refunded only if no place is offered
Cheltenham Muscat Deposit 40% of Term 1 fees Non-refundable, deducted from Term 1, due within 10 working days of an offer
Downe House Muscat Application and assessment fees OMR 150 and OMR 200 Same structure as above, with a 40% Term 1 deposit
Royal Grammar School Guildford Muscat Enrolment and re-enrolment OMR 150 per grade Charged for every grade in the 2026-27 table

Charges the schools price separately

None of the schools includes transport, meals or uniforms in the headline tuition. Cheltenham Muscat states that school lunches, transport, educational trips and some external activities are charged separately. Royal Grammar School Guildford Muscat lists a transport charge of OMR 450 one-way or OMR 650 two-way for short distances and OMR 550 or OMR 750 for long distances, breakfast and lunch at OMR 450 a year, and uniform sets at OMR 65, 75 or 95 depending on grade. TAISM prints an optional bus fee of OMR 1,200 a year for two-way travel, labelled as the 2025-26 school year, so it is a guide to the order of magnitude and not a 2026-27 price. British School Muscat notes supplementary charges for residential trips, some after-school activities and external examinations such as GCSE and A Levels, without listing prices on that page.

Who pays: employers and self-paying families

Two schools state a distinction that matters to property owners. TAISM says instalment plans for tuition and capital levy are available for families whose fees are not paid directly to the school by employers, and ABA’s second enrolment option is open only to self-paying parents. A buyer who relocates for reasons other than an employer posting is by definition in the self-paying group, and those are the families to which these payment schedules apply.

A Worked Two-Child Budget, Step by Step

To turn the tables into one comparable number, take a hypothetical family with two children who are new to Muscat: Child A is 10 and enters Year 6 or Grade 5, and Child B is 13 and enters Year 9 or Grade 8. The arithmetic below adds the 2026-27 tuition for both children and the first-year entry charges that are stated as fixed amounts. It leaves out transport, meals, uniforms, trips, examination fees, refundable deposits and credits against the first invoice, and it does not assume any prepayment discount.

  1. British School Muscat: Year 6 is OMR 6,143 and Year 9 is OMR 8,460, so tuition is 6,143 + 8,460 = OMR 14,603. Add the assessment fee of OMR 50 for each child (OMR 100) and the infrastructure fee of OMR 300 per term for each child over three terms (2 x 3 x 300 = OMR 1,800). The total is 14,603 + 100 + 1,800 = OMR 16,503 ($42,921).
  2. The American International School of Muscat: Elementary is OMR 9,290 and Middle School is OMR 11,030, so tuition is OMR 20,320. Add the capital levy of OMR 4,500 for each child (OMR 9,000). The total is 20,320 + 9,000 = OMR 29,320 ($76,255).
  3. ABA Oman International School: Grades 1 to 5 are OMR 5,460 and Grades 6 to 8 are OMR 7,650, so tuition is OMR 13,110. Add two application fees (2 x 75 = OMR 150) and the Option 1 enrolment fee of OMR 3,500 for the first child plus OMR 3,325 for the second after the 5% sibling rebate (3,500 x 0.95), which is OMR 6,825. The total is 13,110 + 150 + 6,825 = OMR 20,085 ($52,237).
  4. Cheltenham Muscat: Grade 5 is OMR 5,570 and Grade 8 is OMR 6,599, so tuition is OMR 12,169. Add two application fees (OMR 300) and two assessment fees (OMR 400). The total is 12,169 + 300 + 400 = OMR 12,869 ($33,470).
  5. Downe House Muscat: Grade 5 is OMR 5,250 and Grade 8 is OMR 6,250, so tuition is OMR 11,500. Add the same OMR 300 and OMR 400. The total is OMR 12,200 ($31,730).
  6. Royal Grammar School Guildford Muscat: Grade 5 is OMR 4,050 and Grade 8 is OMR 4,800, so tuition is OMR 8,850. Add the enrolment fee of OMR 150 per child (OMR 300). The total is OMR 9,150 ($23,797).
School Tuition for both children Stated entry charges First-year total
British School Muscat OMR 14,603 ($37,979) OMR 1,900 OMR 16,503 ($42,921)
The American International School of Muscat OMR 20,320 ($52,848) OMR 9,000 OMR 29,320 ($76,255)
ABA Oman International School OMR 13,110 ($34,096) OMR 6,975 OMR 20,085 ($52,237)
Cheltenham Muscat OMR 12,169 ($31,649) OMR 700 OMR 12,869 ($33,470)
Downe House Muscat OMR 11,500 ($29,909) OMR 700 OMR 12,200 ($31,730)
Royal Grammar School Guildford Muscat OMR 8,850 ($23,017) OMR 300 OMR 9,150 ($23,797)

Two features of the arithmetic deserve attention. The entry charges are very uneven: they are OMR 300 at one school and OMR 9,000 at another, so first-year and later-year costs diverge more at some schools than others. At British School Muscat the infrastructure fee continues for the first nine terms, so in the second and third years the same family would pay its tuition plus OMR 1,800 a year, and from the fourth year only tuition, before any change in the published tables. At ABA the enrolment fee under Option 1 is paid in the first year, and under Option 2 it is spread over four years.

For scale against other household costs, the school bill in the TAISM example is OMR 20,320 in tuition alone, which is 48.4% of OMR 42,000, the annual income level above which Oman’s personal income tax begins on 1 January 2028 (Royal Decree 56/2025: 5% on income above OMR 42,000, with rental income included). The comparison is only arithmetic. Our cost of living guide sets out rent, utilities and the other monthly lines in the same currency; for school tuition, use the 2026-27 tables above.

Where Our Communities Sit: Drive Times per Listing

Our listing pages print, for most communities, a short list of nearby schools with drive times in minutes. These are the developers’ or sales sheets’ estimates as printed on each listing page, not independently measured journeys, and they depend on traffic, time of day and the exact unit. The table copies them as printed, with the school names spelled as the pages spell them.

Reading the table

Three patterns stand out. First, the two Sultan Haitham City entries that name private schools at 3 to 9 minutes (Sarooj Oasis and Hay Al Wafa) cite Al Firdous Private School, while Jood cites two other schools at 6 and 8 minutes. Because the communities are in the same city but at different addresses, the printed times differ for the same school name. Second, the Telal Al Qurm listing is the only one in this set that names British School Muscat, at 13 minutes; Opal Residences is the only one that names ABA Oman International School, also at 13 minutes. Third, Muscat Bay lists a different group: a school named Indian School at 12 minutes, ISWKI School at 14 and Al Sawha School at 26.

The Dar Muscat Hills page in Madinat Al Irfan lists straight-line distances to two nearby colleges (0.6 km and 0.8 km), not drive times to schools, so it is not in the table. A straight-line figure ignores the road network and should not be read as a commute.

What a short drive time does and does not tell you

A drive time is a property of a road, not of an admission. Being 6 or 8 minutes from a school does not give a child priority for a place; the schools’ own policies decide that. ABA, for example, publishes a waitlist order in which faculty children, siblings of current students, returning students and overseas transfer students precede other applicants. British School Muscat says that some year groups have waiting lists. Schools also run buses: TAISM and Royal Grammar School Guildford Muscat both publish bus or transport fees, so a longer distance can be covered by a paid route instead of a parent’s car.

The Communities and Their Numbers Side by Side

The same listing pages give the price, size, handover and service-charge data needed to place the school run to international schools in Muscat next to a property question. The table lists the entry unit of each community that appears above, using the figures printed on each listing page on 16 October 2026. Prices are developer entry points, vary by floor, orientation and plot, and are not offers.

Service-charge arithmetic is useful here because it shows how small the building charge is relative to a school bill. At the Opal Residences rate of OMR 6.5 per m², the 82 m² one-bedroom comes to about OMR 533 a year (82 x 6.5 = 533). British School Muscat’s Year 6 tuition of OMR 6,143 is about 11.5 times that charge (6,143 divided by 533 is 11.5). At the Alef Qurum rate of OMR 5 per m² the entry one-bedroom is about OMR 313 a year (62.6 x 5 = 313), and the same Year 6 tuition is about 19.6 times it (6,143 divided by 313 is 19.6). Our service charges guide explains how those per-square-metre rates are billed.

Community notes drawn from the listing pages

Jood sits in Sultan Haitham City, about 24 km from Muscat International Airport according to its page, on a 2.7 million m² site that the page says is nearly 50% green space. Hay Al Wafa lists a school and kindergarten within walking distance inside the community, plus a private clinic. Bellevue is in Al Mouj, which holds Integrated Tourism Complex (ITC) status; its page lists the beach and the marina as 14 and 15 minutes on foot. Opal Residences is in Muscat Hills. Muscat Bay states that central Muscat is 25 minutes by car and the airport 40 minutes. For the broader picture of each community, our Al Mouj guide and Sultan Haitham City guide go deeper, and the Muscat areas overview compares the freehold zones. The developers behind these communities are indexed in our Oman developer directory.

Admission Basics at International Schools in Muscat

Admission is a process the school controls, and the three schools whose process pages were read in full describe it in similar steps.

British School Muscat

The school asks families to read its admissions policy, complete an application form and an online medical form, and email the required documents. It then checks whether a space exists at the requested start date, and if not, places the child on a waiting list. The school says it replies on application status within five working days. The child is assessed, and the outcome is an offer, a request for further testing or a meeting, or an unsuccessful application. The assessment depends on age: a play assessment and toileting independence in the Foundation Stage; cognitive ability tests plus a school reference and interview from Year 1 to Year 6; and, for Years 7 to 11, a cognitive ability test, a reference and an interview. For the Sixth Form, the school lists a reference, an interview, a possible cognitive test and at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or C including English and mathematics. Applications are accepted at any point in the school year, and Year 13 entry is considered case by case. All lessons are in English, and a child who is new to English gets a place only when the school can provide enough support.

The American International School of Muscat

TAISM lists an online application, a confidential school report in two parts (the parents complete the first and the current or former school the second), official school records, an assessment and a reference from the present school. Records requested cover the previous year for Kindergarten, the previous two years for Grades 1 to 11, and the Grade 9 to 11 records for Grade 12. After an offer is confirmed in writing, registration includes a physical examination report, an updated passport and Omani residence visa, immunisation records and, for Grades 1 to 5, an English Language Learner form. The school says it accepts students throughout the year.

ABA Oman International School

ABA asks for an online application, a non-refundable fee of OMR 75, a passport copy, Oman resident card copies where applicable, and school reports for the current and previous year that are officially translated into English and notarised for Grades 1 to 12, plus official records for the past two years. Kindergarten to Grade 5 applicants may be invited to a classroom visit, and Grade 3 to 12 applicants sit a placement screener in language and mathematics. Admissions are rolling, subject to space, and every admission carries a 90-day probationary period under the school’s board policy.

Documents most schools want at the start

The shared core is simple: passports for the child and parents, recent school reports and records, a photograph, and medical or immunisation records. Resident cards appear on the lists too. British School Muscat names the child’s and parents’ Oman Resident Card copies as required before starting, though not to apply, and TAISM lists the Omani residence visa as part of registration. Because each school sets its own list, the document list on the school’s own page governs.

Age Cut-Offs and Grade Placement

The age rule that decides a child’s year group is not the same everywhere, and families moving from another country often find their child one year ahead or behind the expected grade. TAISM uses a student’s age on 31 October. Its equivalency page, reproduced in part below, maps age to the American grade and to the British year group.

Student age on 31 October TAISM grade British year group Indian grade
4+ Pre-Kindergarten 4 Reception / FS2 KG 1
5+ Kindergarten Year 1 KG 2
6+ Grade 1 Year 2 Grade 1
10+ Grade 5 Year 6 Grade 5
13+ Grade 8 Year 9 Grade 8
14+ Grade 9 Year 10 (GCSE / IGCSE) Grade 9
16+ Grade 11 Year 12 (Sixth Form, A Levels) Grade 11
17+ Grade 12 Year 13 Grade 12

ABA uses a date-of-birth window instead. For 2026-27 its page maps children born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016 to Grade 5, those born between 1 September 2020 and 31 August 2021 to Kindergarten, and those born between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009 to Grade 12. The two rules cut the calendar in different places: ABA’s windows run from 1 September to 31 August, while TAISM counts age on 31 October. A child born on 15 September 2016 shows the effect. Under ABA’s windows the child falls in the group born between 1 September 2016 and 31 August 2017, which is Grade 4; under TAISM’s rule the child is 10 on 31 October 2026 (the 10th birthday falls on 15 September 2026), which is Grade 5. Children born in September and October therefore can sit one grade apart at the two schools.

Both schools also say that placement is decided by the admissions team after reviewing records, so the age tables are starting points. British School Muscat does not state a cut-off date on its admissions page.

The School-Year Calendar and Payment Dates

The calendar is where relocation planning meets paperwork. Government schools and international schools in Muscat run on slightly different calendars, and payment deadlines at private schools fall before or at the first day of each term. The table combines the dates printed on the schools’ pages.

Holidays that move

British School Muscat marks several holidays with an asterisk to show that dates may change with Omani holiday announcements: the Prophet’s Birthday on 27 August 2026, National Day on 25 and 26 November 2026, the Prophet’s Ascension on 6 January 2027, the Sultan’s Accession on 11 January 2027, Omani Teachers’ Day on 24 February 2027, Eid Al Fitr from 9 to 11 March 2027 and Eid Al Adha from 16 to 18 May 2027. The school also notes that Ramadan, which is not a school holiday, is expected to begin on 8 February 2027. The dates are forecasts until the official announcements.

Entry points during the year

Three of the schools that publish admission pages state that applications are accepted during the year: British School Muscat at any point, TAISM throughout the year and ABA on a rolling basis subject to space. The difference between accepting an application and having a seat is the waiting list; ABA’s page says places are not held or confirmed until the school issues an official letter. Under British School Muscat’s calendar the natural mid-year starting points are Sunday 3 January 2027 and Sunday 11 April 2027, while the next full-year start falls in late August 2027.

Relocation Timing: Matching Handover Dates to School Years

Most of the listings in this guide are off-plan, so families who plan around international schools in Muscat need to read each handover date as a developer’s target for a building that is not yet complete.

Placing those targets against the school calendar shows which school year a family would be in when the keys are expected. The table below uses a simple rule: a child in Grade 5 in 2026-27 is in Grade 6 in 2027-28, Grade 7 in 2028-29 and Grade 8 in 2029-30, and a private-school year runs from late August to June.

Listing Handover target per listing page School year in which it falls Grade of a child who is in Grade 5 in 2026-27
Hay Al Wafa Q4 2027 2027-28, autumn term Grade 6
Bellevue Q4 2027 2027-28, autumn term Grade 6
Opal Residences Q4 2028 2028-29, autumn term Grade 7
Alef Qurum Residence Q2 2029 2028-29, summer term Grade 7
Yamal Q4 2029 2029-30, autumn term Grade 8
Dar Muscat Hills From December 2029 2029-30, autumn term Grade 8
Jood Q1 2030 2029-30, spring term Grade 8
Muscat Bay Complete Any school year Grade 5 now

Two readings follow from the table. A handover in the autumn term of a school year, such as Q4 2027 or Q4 2028, falls in the middle of the first term, which means a family that moves in at handover would do so after the school year has started. A handover in the second quarter, such as Alef Qurum Residence’s Q2 2029, falls near the end of the year, in the same quarter as the end of the summer term in June. Neither pattern is good or bad; they are simply the arithmetic of the calendar.

A child’s age at handover also changes the school question. The same Grade 5 child who is 10 in 2026 is 13 or 14 at the Q1 2030 handover of Jood, which means the relevant fee band is no longer Elementary or Key Stage 2 but Middle School or Key Stage 3. In the fee table, the step from the age-10 column to the age-14 column adds OMR 3,360 a year at British School Muscat (9,503 less 6,143), OMR 2,270 at TAISM (11,560 less 9,290), OMR 2,980 at ABA (8,440 less 5,460), OMR 1,243 at Cheltenham Muscat (6,813 less 5,570) and OMR 1,250 at Downe House Muscat (6,500 less 5,250). Our handover calendar lists the completion targets across the market, and the guide to buying off-plan in Oman explains the escrow and payment mechanics behind them.

Residency Paperwork and School Registration

International schools in Muscat ask for resident cards, and a property purchase is not itself a resident card. Per our listing pages, the Owner Visa (Royal Oman Police Decision 87/2026) has no minimum property value, is sponsor-free, is tied to ownership and covers a spouse and first-degree relatives, and the Royal Oman Police confirms eligibility. Golden Residency is a separate route: it requires a single Integrated Tourism Complex property worth at least OMR 200,000 ($520,160), and the Royal Oman Police decides each application. The entry units in the communities above are priced below that threshold, while the larger villas at Hay Al Wafa (from about OMR 242,100) and Muscat Bay (from OMR 344,894, or $897,000) are at or above it, according to their pages. Our guide to Golden Residency and the Owner Visa compares the two in detail.

School registration lists then ask for documents that depend on the permit a family holds. The Owner Visa is described on our pages as running 6 months to 1 year and renewable, and the school lists above name resident cards and visas generally without distinguishing by permit type. A family should read each school’s current document list and ask the school what it accepts, and should also look at the escrow and registry rules that govern off-plan payments, described in our Law 79/2025 guide.

Three things the schools do not decide

Schools set tuition and admission; they do not set the property rules. Freehold ownership by foreigners in Oman is tied to designated zones such as Integrated Tourism Complexes, so a family looking at a neighbourhood near a school should check whether the building sits inside one before assuming it is open to foreign buyers. Our price per square metre ranking shows how the communities compare on price once the ownership route is clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many international schools are there in Muscat?

The International Schools Database lists 38 international schools in Muscat on 16 October 2026, each tagged with a curriculum. The tags include 25 with a British label, 9 with an IB label and 4 with an American label, with some schools carrying more than one tag. The list changes as schools open or close, and the school’s own site is the reference for its status.

How much do international schools in Muscat cost in 2026-27?

Among the six schools whose 2026-27 fee pages were read for this guide, annual tuition runs from OMR 2,750 ($7,152) at the youngest band of Royal Grammar School Guildford Muscat to OMR 11,560 ($30,065) at TAISM High School. British School Muscat runs from OMR 4,400 to OMR 10,666, ABA from OMR 3,790 to OMR 10,210, Cheltenham Muscat from OMR 3,899 to OMR 8,111 and Downe House Muscat from OMR 3,470 to OMR 7,500. Entry charges, transport and meals are extra.

Which curricula can a child follow?

International schools in Muscat offer British (English National Curriculum with GCSE or IGCSE and A Levels), American with AP courses, the IB continuum, Indian-board schools and a French-curriculum school, all of which are listed for Muscat. Which curriculum fits a given child is decided by the family and the school, and by the qualification the child needs for the next stage at home or abroad.

When does the school year begin?

International schools in Muscat start earlier than government schools. British School Muscat started its autumn term on Sunday 23 August 2026, and ABA’s first-semester payment fell due on 26 August 2026. Government schools opened on Sunday 6 September 2026 after the Ministry of Education moved the start by a week from 30 August to support the khareef season, according to the Oman Observer. Each school publishes its own calendar.

Can a child join in the middle of the year?

British School Muscat accepts applications at any point in the school year, TAISM accepts students throughout the year and ABA admits on a rolling basis subject to space. A place still depends on availability, the assessment and the documents, and some year groups have waiting lists. British School Muscat’s next terms begin on 3 January and 11 April 2027.

What documents do schools usually ask for?

Passport copies for the child and parents, a photograph, recent school reports and records, and immunisation or medical records are the common core. ABA also asks for English translations that are notarised for reports in other languages, TAISM asks for a confidential school report completed by the current school, and British School Muscat and TAISM both refer to Oman residence documents before the child starts.

How close are the communities on your pages to these schools?

Our listing pages print drive times for some schools: for example 6 minutes to Al Ibdaa International Private School and 8 minutes to TAISM from Jood, 13 minutes to ABA Oman International School from Opal Residences, and 13 minutes to British School Muscat from Alef Qurum Residence. These are the figures each page prints and depend on traffic and the exact unit.

Does buying a property come with a school place or residency?

No. School places are decided by each school’s admission policy and waiting list. A purchase does not by itself issue a resident card either: the Owner Visa under Royal Oman Police Decision 87/2026 has no minimum value, is sponsor-free and is tied to ownership, and Golden Residency requires a single ITC property worth at least OMR 200,000 decided by the Royal Oman Police.

Do school fees rise every year?

British School Muscat publishes two consecutive tables, and its 2026-27 tuition is between 3.7% and 3.9% above 2025-26 in every year group. ABA notes that fees for 2027-2028 are subject to change, and Cheltenham Muscat says its fees are reviewed annually. A multi-year budget should be rebuilt from each year’s published table.

Are international school fees in Muscat paid in rials?

Yes, the fee pages read for this guide state amounts in Omani rials. With the rial pegged at 2.6008 to the US dollar, a school bill of OMR 10,000 equals $26,008, and our guide to the rial peg explains what that peg means for a foreign buyer.
